SOCI 361: Sustainable Central America
Costa Rica & PanamaExplore locally designed strategies in a global context: Experience what is working for communities seeking economic growth, biodiverse ecosystems and the power to shape the future.
Whose footsteps? Whose future?
Panama and Costa Rica’s geography have made the region vital to the global economy and home to some of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth.
To better understand the global forces shaping development, this course is centered on the efforts two communities: one on Panama’s Caribbean coast and another on Costa Rica’s Pacific.
In recent decades everyday people in both have reduced poverty, empowered women, improved public health and educated the next generation to steward forests.
Students learn first hand how leaders in each community have defined progress, how they designed strategies to meet their goals, which have resulted in their success and what the future looks like from their perspective.
